Wild Plants and Medicinal Foraging Walk

Take a walk with Erica and learn about the abundance of wild plants in the Agassiz Forest Area. This is a great class for anyone who is just getting into foraging; learn about picking protocol, the most common local wild foods, medicinal plants, and edible flowers.

Perfect for foraging newcomers, you'll learn about sustainable picking practices, local wild foods, medicinal plants, and edible flowers. Each class includes delicious bannock and a refreshing foraged drink along with a short hands on cooking class, making it a delightful blend of education and nature. All recipes are shared on the website.

Put on your boots, long pants and bug protective clothing (maybe slap on some sunscreen too) Pick up a mesh bag and come out to explore a couple of different spaces in the area (to be announced closer to the class date) We will learn how to properly pick some plants found commonly in your lawn and on forest edges, go over identification and if it's an edible or medicine (or both).

Embrace nature and reconnect with our roots while we share the excitement of foraging over here at MBH.

*Classes need to be a minimum of 6 people or they will be postponed to the next class date due to time constraints in 2026*

Forage, Feast + Teach

We are excited to offer a new culinary and nature experience for 2026 at Mossy Birch Homestead.

Located in the Agassiz forest in Eastern Manitoba, each session includes a foraging class, elder/knowledge keeper teaching + meal that Erica will create; the meal will showcase 6 plates of edible plants and more that she and her family has foraged off the land.

Learn how to identify some easy to find edible and medicinal plants, how to harvest them + discuss the ways to utilize them. While you are out on your mini foraging class with one of our guides, Erica will be cooking (and baking) up a 6 course meal made from all of the items that her family uses and forages.

We will start off with a smudge (or cleanse) and offering to the land before going for a 30-40 minute walk. When you come back from your foraging + forest bathing walk, your first plate will be waiting for you on a feasting table located outside on our homestead so that you can enjoy the outdoors while enjoying + learning about each plate that has been created. Erica will discuss the method of how it was cooked and the recipes for all of the courses will be included in a booklet for you to take home. We will finish off the day with an Elder or Knowledge Keeper's teachings.

Each meal will include seasonal offerings, such as floral syrups or fermented drinks, mushrooms, herbs and more. A menu will be set up when the session times open up.

This session is about a 3 hour plus  forage, feast + teach; please be mindful to show up on time so that you can take in all that we have to offer. There is a max of 10 people per forage + feast; make sure you book early! We ask that you bring an offering of tobacco for the Elder/Knowledge Keeper.

We will do our best to be conscience of food allergies or intolerances; if you are booking and you have one, it is important to notify immediately so that we can ensure a smooth meal for everyone.

We are excited to host you at our table; see you soon!

Wild Edibles + Medicinals Walk  on Your property

Private classes require a non-refundable, pre-payment of 50$ and a minimum of 3 paid students for 2026. Mileage will be calculated to accomodate the rising gas prices.

Take a walk with Erica and learn about the abundance of wild plants, mushrooms, and medicinals on your property. This is a great class for anyone who wants to learn about the most common, local wild foods, medicinal plants, and edible flowers around you and to better know your land. Each private class lasts about 2-3 hours and is suitable for novice and veteran foragers alike.

We will pick some items, go over identification and confirmations of plants/trees/fungi etc. This class is going to be all about our connection with the earth and how to use what is provided to us!

Be sure to set aside a few hours for this so that you don't feel rushed!

A foraging thank you

J + I just wanted to reach out and extend our thanks once again for such an excellent foraging experience. All of the knowledge you shared, the experience in the fresh air on beautiful property, and your kindness were incredible. We left practically feeling like a high from such a rewarding experience for both of us. The chanterelles were AMAZING in our fettuccine alfredo later that evening, and your plantain salve is incredible for J's psoriasis. We will definitely be purchasing that in the future. We are excited to come again next summer and will be using all the knowledge gained this summer from you to incorporate certain medicinal plants into our garden next summer. We just can't tell you enough how rewarding this was for us, and our many thanks goes out to you.

Kindest Regards,  C+J
